To see a world
In a grain of sand
And heaven in a wildflower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

~ William Blake

Welcome to Amos K. Hutchinson Elementary School! We are happy you are here!

The poet, William Blake, captures the way children view the world around them. Children cannot help but wonder, inquire, and explore, and learn as they do so. Here, at Hutchinson Elementary School, it is our goal to capitalize on this natural inquisitiveness of young children to provide them the skills, knowledge, and insight they need in order to be successful in the 21st Century. As another poet—William Butler Yeats—put it, we view education as “not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

The above quotes mirror the motto of the Greensburg Salem School District—Effort Creates Ability—or, as we say it at the elementary level, “The harder you work, the smarter you become.” It is a motto rooted in the belief that intelligence, creativity, and skill are qualities that one can achieve, or “grow,” through hard work and support, and are not merely fixed qualities with which each of us are born, unable to be developed or fostered. The children that come to us are not merely “pails” with a limited capacity for learning; they are hungry “fires” eager to consume what is taught to them so they can burn brighter and stronger.

Throughout this school year, I welcome you to partner with the faculty, staff, and administration at Hutchinson Elementary School to ensure our students have the most positive learning experience in a safe and nurturing environment. Together, we will help our children become better than they are and set them on the path to be successful, lifelong learners.
